late to the party as always but fashionable in a corduroy jacket and sideburns … may I offer this cocktail of quotations from deep tracks that I heard Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform way, way back when … when rock transmissions of live arena concerts were broadcast on the FM … I taped it, of course, and for years thought what I was rewinding to replay were unreleased Petty songs, but they weren’t. They were J.J. Cale’s “Thirteen Days” and The Byrd’s “Ballad of the Easy Rider” … lyrics to which ring relevant today as they always have. As Petty was fond of, I too, take some liberties with this selection. The river flows / it flows to the sea / Wherever that river goes / That’s where I want to be // I saw the sun go down in Atlanta / Come up in New Orleans // I woke up in between / A mattress and a limousine // All he wanted was to be free / And that’s the way it turned out to be // Some take to religion / Some take to magazines / Sometimes we make money / sometimes I don’t know / Thirteen days with five to go.

So I tried to go to Brenham … But they closed The Grand Parkway at I-10 … So I tried to go back home … But parts of The Grand Parkway were completely underwater. So I found my way to FM 1464 where I found so many neighborhoods completely submerged. I found a way to the West Park and looped back around via the Sam Houston Parkway to 59. And then back home. And I feel so lucky that this little misadventure is the worst I have experienced and my heart goes out to my neighbors and friends who have lost everything. If you don’t have to leave where you are … Don’t.
